The basic meaning of the Sanskrit word rāga is “emotion,” “affect,” or “passion.” The identity of a rāga seems ultimately to devolve from the associative and expressive effects of its tonal configurations, and for several hundred years Indian theory has had precise, instrumentally determined means for describing intervallic structures and scale-types.
