(b Augusta, Sicily, March 20, 1680; d ?Madrid, 1757). Italian composer. Before Volkmann’s research his biography (as given by Fétis, for example) was largely a tissue of colourful legend. Over the last 50–60 years, sparked by Volkmann’s work, other important contributions have been made by Frank Walker, Ottavio Tiby, Roberto Pagano, Juan Josè Carreras and Berthold Over which have brought some clarity to many events in Astorga’s life....
