(b Wiesenberg, Moravia, Jan 5, 1931). Austrian pianist, of German, Italian and Slavonic descent. He studied the piano first in Zagreb and later in Graz, where he gave his début recital in 1948. He was also a student of conducting and composition; having composed as a young man, he has remained strongly interested in new music, although it has not featured in his playing career. He completed his piano studies with Paul Baumgartner, Edward Steuermann and above all with Edwin Fischer, who, in Brendel's words, ‘led two generations of young pianists “away from the piano, and to themselves”’.
