(b Paris, Dec 21, 1929). British composer of Anglo-French parentage. He studied composition with Imogen Holst at Dartington (1946–7) and with Jacob at the RCM (1948–51), where in 1960 he was appointed professor. His musical personality is characterized by a fierce individualism, reflected in his use of a forthright and uncompromising musical language.
