(b Drummondsville, ON, Oct 11, 1882; d Battle Creek, MI, Oct 2, 1943). American educator, composer and conductor. He studied the piano from an early age. When Dett was 11 the family moved to Niagara Falls, New York. In 1908 he became the first black American to receive the BM degree from the Oberlin College Conservatory (in composition and piano).
