Brought up in Baltimore, he studied there at the Peabody Conservatory and Johns Hopkins University, and later at Harvard and the Amsterdam Conservatory. His teachers included Charles Courboin, Virgil Fox, E. Power Biggs and Ernest White for organ; Robert Shaw, G.
