(b Andria, Apulia, Jan 24, 1705; d Bologna, 16/Sept 17, 1782). Italian soprano castrato, the most admired of all the castrato singers.

In 1740, Farinelli wrote of his birth to Count Pepoli, ‘I do not claim I was born from the third rib of Venus, nor that my father was Neptune. I am Neapolitan and the Duke of Andria held me at the baptismal font, which is enough to say that I am a son of a good citizen and of a gentleman’.
