His first formal studies were at the Birmingham School of Music (1961–3); a Prokofiev-like Sonatina for three clarinets, now withdrawn, dates from this period. From 1966 to 1967 he studied at the RAM, where his teachers included Lennox Berkeley; he became musical director of the Academy’s New Music Club, and founded and conducted the Arradon Ensemble, which specialized in contemporary music.
