(b Satu Mare, Romania, June 10, 1929; d Cluj-Napoca, Romania, March 20, 2010). Romanian composer and musicologist. His research studies were essential in configuring a new musicological style in Romania in the area of structural and stylistic analysis of modern national music. His roughly 125 musical works experiment with avant-garde styles (serialism, mathematical structuring, and indeterminacy) in parallel to distilling the sonic essences of Romanian folklore. A wide range of chamber works for novel ensembles of soloist instruments (including percussion), his five symphonies, and his opera Pasărea măiastră (‘The Magic Bird’) can be considered his most representative works....
