(b Iserlohn, May 14, 1931). German pianist, brother of Alfons Kontarsky. He studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Cologne with Else Schmitz-Gohr and Maurits Frank (1952–5) and in Hamburg with Eduard Erdmann (1955–7). In 1955 he and his brother won the first prize for piano duo at the Bavarian Radio International Festival in Munich. Since then they have given concerts together throughout the world, winning an international reputation, predominantly in contemporary music.
