(b Ferrara, 1545; d Ferrara, 10 Sept 1607). Italian composer, organist, and teacher. He was the leading musician at the Ferrara court in the later 16th century, a noted teacher and keyboard player, and an influential madrigalist and composer of instrumental music.

He appears to have lived his entire life in Ferrara. According to his own testimony he was a pupil of Cipriano de Rore. He probably studied the organ with Jacques Brunel and may also have studied composition with Alfonso dalla Viola after Rore left Ferrara in ...
