(b Braşov, Romania, July 11, 1857; d Blaj, Romania, June 6, 1917). Romanian composer, conductor, pianist, and teacher. He worked toward a national style in professional music, founding his idiom more on the authentic folklore of different regions than on the music of Roma fiddlers (Lăutarii). His works anticipated the style of Romanian oratorios, at the same time outlining the elements of programmatic orchestral music and contributing to the development of the stage genres of the 19th century, which were represented in Romania by vaudeville and operetta....
