(b Ismail, March 20, 1847; d Iaşi, Dec 20, 1903). Romanian composer, teacher, and choirmaster. His choral works and activity as a conductor of the Metropolitan Choir of Iaşi, which held concerts in all the historic provinces of Romania, represented musical highlights of the late 19th century. On the compositional plane, he contributed decisively to the harmonic and polyphonic adaptation of monodic church chants and Romanian folk tunes. Musicescu may be regarded as a founder of the Romanian choral school and an early practitioner of modal harmony....
