(b Petrovskoye, Lugansk region, Aug 27, 1920). Russian bass . In 1949 he graduated from the Kishinyov conservatory and was engaged as a soloist by the Bol′shoy. His début as Dosifey (Khovanshchina) and his performances as Boris soon afterwards brought him immediate recognition as a singer of unusual dramatic accomplishment and authority, with a strong, beautiful voice of velvety timbre, and an imposing stage presence.
