After living for three years in Florida and nine years in Liège, he returned to Paris in 1905, following the death of his father. He was a pupil of Roussel at the Schola Cantorum (where he also studied the violin) and later, on Satie's advice, he went to study with Ravel, becoming a devoted follower of that composer.
