(b Kharkiv, Aug 31, 1895; d New York, March 23, 1943). Russian theorist and composer, naturalized American. He studied composition and conducting at the St Petersburg Conservatory (1914–18), where his teachers included Nikolay Tcherepnin, and also trained in mathematics.
