(b Debrno, nr Kralupy nad Vltavou, Sept 18, 1836; d Prague, Sept 1, 1904). Czech writer on music. He was educated in Prague at the Malá Strana grammar school and Prague University (1858–63), where he studied history and Slavonic philology. As a youth he sang alto at St Štěpán and the Týn church and later also sang at the Žofínská Akademie.
