(b St Petersburg, 14/Dec 26, 1893; d Minsk, Nov 23, 1970). Belarusian composer of Polish origin. His systematic music education was limited to private studies of the piano and theory with Volkova-Bonch-Bruyevich in St Petersburg (1912–14); in composition he was largely self-taught. He began to compose at the age of 14 (a symphony and some operas on Russian literary subjects), consulting with his friend the composer Deshevov.
