Societies exist in Britain, Switzerland and the USA to promote the playing and the study of viols. The British society was founded in 1948; its presidents have been Jack Westrup and Nathalie Dolmetsch, and Gordon Dodd was prominent in its organization. In 1998 the president was Alison Crum.
