(b Bucharest, Feb 22, 1836; d Bucharest, Dec 23, 1908). Romanian composer and conductor of German origin. After early lessons in Bucharest with his father, the composer and conductor Ioan Andrei Wachmann (1807–63), he studied in Vienna with Nottebohm and Dachs, and in Paris with Reber, Marmontel, and Carafa. Upon his return, he collaborated with popular theatre groups as a pianist, conductor, and composer. He taught harmony at the newly founded Music and Declamation Conservatory in Bucharest, whose directorial position he occupied for 34 years (...
