(b Berlin, Aug 25, 1902; d New York, April 4, 1972). American composer of German birth and Russian parentage. He began studies in theory and composition at the age of 14 and in 1920–21 attended the Berlin Hochschule für Musik, where he studied under Paul Juon. He then applied to Busoni’s masterclass at the Akademie der Künste; though he was not accepted, Busoni befriended him and passed on valued advice.
