(b Schwechat, nr Vienna, Feb 8, 1765; d Vienna, July 24, 1846). Austrian composer. He received his first music lessons from his father, a choir director and schoolteacher in Schwechat. By the age of six he was able to perform a piano concerto for a visiting Viennese official, who recommended him for musical training to the choir school at the Stephansdom (where his distantly related cousins Joseph and Michael Haydn had studied).
