Slovenian town, under Austrian rule until 1919 (Marburg). Records of church music go back to the 13th century. In the late 16th century many musicians left the Slovenian region, among them Daniel Lagkhner, a native of Maribor. There is documentary evidence of professional musicians (Musikmeister) playing at social gatherings from the Baroque era onwards. Music from the Baroque period and later is kept in the archives of the Catholic diocese and of the main parish church.
