Term used in percussion playing for any stick, beater or hammer that has a head, whether it be the small felt ball for the timpani stick, or the large weighted head needed to bring out the tone of a tam-tam. Keyboard percussion instruments such as the vibraphone, marimba and xylophone are today normally spoken of collectively as ‘mallet instruments’.
