(b Castenholtz, nr Cologne, bap. Feb 21, 1700; d Paris, Sept 1769). French harpsichord maker. His six-year apprenticeship with the German-born harpsichord maker Antoine Vater (fl Paris, 1715–59) began at the advanced age of 28, suggesting that Hemsch had already learned instrument making or a related trade, perhaps in his native Germany.
