(b Oviedo, 1896; d Mexico, Jan 24, 1982). Spanish composer. Born into a musical family, she first studied in Oviedo, where she was a piano and composition pupil of Saturnino del Fresno, who had a strong interest in traditional Asturian music; she was profoundly influenced by the music of Bach, and was to become particularly noted for her contrapuntal style and rational temperament. She continued her studies at the Conservatorio Real, Madrid, with Benito García de la Parra, whose advocacy of the use of modes also influenced her decisively.
