(b New York, Feb 7, 1914; d Los Angeles, CA, June 26, 1997). American composer, arranger, and songwriter. The son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, Bassman studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music. From 1931 to 1934 he arranged for big bands, including those led by Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman.
