State-supported arts conservatory. The North Carolina School of the Arts opened in Winston-Salem in 1965, joined the University of North Carolina system in 1972, and was renamed UNCSA in 2008. Five professional schools with a total enrollment of 1,100 provide training for high school through graduate students: Dance, Design and Production (including Visual Arts), Drama, Filmmaking, and Music. The High School and Undergraduate Academic Programs provide a strong curriculum of academic courses. The School of Music, with an enrollment of 260, offers a high school diploma, BM, College Arts Diploma, MM, and Professional Artist Certificate. The Music Library, a department in the UNCSA Library, holds nearly 120,000 items. The UNCSA Archives include published scores of Vittorio Giannini, scores of Louis Cheslock, papers of Gladys Swarthout, and the Benjamin Swalin Collection....
