(b Minsk, Russia, Jan 1, 1891; d New York, Jan 8, 1963). American music executive, music director, and cellist, born in Russia. Immigrated to the United States in 1922 and naturalized in 1929. Born into a family with longstanding musical ties to Russian royalty, he was educated at the Imperial Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where he studied with Alexander Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov. Leaving Russia after World War I, he eventually made his way via Constantinople to the United States as music director of a touring French musical revue.
