Inquiry concerning the nature, value, and practice of music and music education. Plato asserted that education in music contributes to developing persons well suited for community life. Aristotle saw it as enabling people to use music for intellectual enjoyment in leisure. Boethius, in affirming the Pythagorean unity of mathematics and music, designated music as first among the seven liberal arts, the predominant school curriculum of the Middle Ages. Notable figures in the Church held differing views. Augustine regarded music’s sensual pleasures as suspect, but ultimately endorsed music in church services for its validation of Christian brotherhood. Protestant reformers Martin Luther and John Calvin assigned music different but prominent places in churches as well as schools. Luther affirmed music as a gift of God and argued for the inclusion of good music in education for its influence on moral development. Calvin held the church to be responsible for education and believed music to be important only insofar as it fostered devotion to God and aided human well-being....
