(b Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY, Jan 1, 1931; d Bronx, NY, March 25, 2009). American percussionist and bandleader. Oquendo, whose heritage was Puerto Rican, grew up in Harlem. He took drum set lessons with Sam Ulano (alongside Max Roach). Ubaldo Nieto, timbale player for Machito and his Afro-Cubans, was an early influence. In the late 1940s, Oquendo began playing professionally with bandleaders Jose Budet, Pupi Campo, José Curbelo, Luis del Campo, Frank García (alongside “Chano” Pozo), Marcelino Guerra, Carlos Medina, Juanito Sanabria, Juan Torres, and Charlie Valero.
