(b Newark, NJ, March 15, 1940). American arranger and trumpet player. After early training as a snare drum player, Sheller turned to the trumpet, debuting in the Catskill Mountains in 1958. That year he joined saxophonist Hugo Dickens’ band, playing for social dances in Harlem. This band was part of a small set of groups made up of musicians fluent in Latin, Afro-Latin, and Afro-American popular styles.
