(b nr Clyde, MI, Feb 5, 1866; d Lake Bluff, IL, May 18, 1952). American teacher and composer. While attending high school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he studied harmony with Francis L. York. He studied engineering and then liberal arts at the University of Michigan, taking some music courses under Calvin B. Cady. He was chapel organist and glee club leader and played organ in local churches while at the university, and in his final year he composed his first large work, The Passing of Summer, a cantata for soloists, chorus, and orchestra, which was performed by the University Musical Society the night before his graduation in ...
