American manufacturer of fretted stringed instruments. Guild Guitars was founded by Avram “Alfred” Dronge (b Warsaw, Poland, 16 Aug 1911; d Groton, CT, 3 May 1972) in 1952 in New York City, and commenced manufacturing the following year. Archtop electric guitars were the company’s first products, with acoustic flat-top guitars and acoustic archtop guitars added in the following two years. Guild’s guitar models in the 1950s and 1960s often shared design features with competitors Gibson, Gretsch, and Epiphone. Like other manufacturers in the 1960s, Guild created special models in conjunction with celebrity musicians, such as Duane Eddy and George Barnes....
