(b East Liverpool, OH, 3 July 1901; d Chevy Chase, MD, 18 Nov 1953). American composer, folk music transcriber and arranger, and educator. She was the first woman to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship in composition, and developed a distinctive, sinewy modernist style that frequently used serial techniques. Her work in American traditional music, which she transcribed, arranged, taught, and theorized, was a major contribution to the folk revival....
