(b Providence, RI, May 23, 1967). American jazz guitarist. His mother repaired guitars and moved the family to Berkeley, California, in 1974. As a teenager Hunter studied with Joe Satriani, and at the age of 18 he became interested in jazz, citing Charlie Parker, Charlie Christian, and John Coltrane as influences. In the late 1980s he began experimenting with adapting the jazz organ style of Jimmy Smith and Larry Young to the guitar, using a custom-made seven-string guitar to gain additional low range (tuned A–d–a–d′–g′–b′-e′′)....
