(b Kinard, FL, April 25, 1928; d Goodlettsville, TN, Aug 16, 2005). American fiddler. One of the most distinctive bluegrass and country fiddlers of his generation, he made history by collaborating with musical luminaries from rock, jazz, and other genres. He grew up in Kissimmee, Florida, and was mostly self-taught, playing guitar as a boy and later learning fiddle. He formed a string band with two cousins and listened regularly to the “Grand Ole Opry.” He also idolized the sounds of Glenn Miller and other big band leaders of the era, ultimately absorbing their influence into a signature fiddle style that fused country, jazz, and blues vocabularies....
