(b Bolt, WV, Dec 19, 1920; d Nashville, January 2, 2015). American country music singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was brought up on a ranch and at the age of 17 began performing on the radio station WILS in Beckley, West Virginia, where he was known as Jimmy the Kid, owing to his four-foot, ten-inch frame. He attended the University of West Virginia briefly, but singing interested him more. With a repertory of old sentimental and gospel songs, he gained experience performing on various radio stations: WIBC in Indianapolis, WLW in Cincinnati, and WKNX in Saginaw, Michigan. In ...
