American songwriting and production duo. Jimmy Jam (James Samuel Harris; b Minneapolis, MN, 6 June 1959) and Terry [Steven] Lewis (b Omaha, NE, 24 Nov 1956) have helped to reshape African American popular music since the 1980s with edgy, street-smart productions and sophisticated song lyrics that appealed to a broad audience. Their hits also popularized new jack swing, a style of youth-oriented dance music closely related to hip hop and R&B.
