It was founded in 1885 by Gustave Schirmer Jr. (b New York, NY, 18 Feb 1864; d Boston, MA, 15 July 1907) and operated from premises at 2 Beacon Street, Boston; its first publication, Arthur Whiting’s Concert Etude for piano, was issued the following year.
