(b Detroit, MI, Jan 1, 1923; d New York, NY, Oct 9, 1999). American jazz vibraphonist. He taught himself to play guitar at the age of seven. He received piano lessons at 11 and took up other instruments in high school, including timpani, violin, and xylophone. His first public appearance was as a singer in a local gospel quintet; around the same time he also performed in the band of George E. Lee.
