(b New York, NY, Nov 18, 1955). American Composer. Although he enjoyed music and studied piano in his youth, he did not immediately or actively pursue music as a profession. In 1977 he graduated from Harvard University, where he had studied mathematics and computer science and was interested in drawing and animation. After college he designed computer software for a biology laboratory and worked as an animator at the New York Institute of Technology. He also continued to develop his interest in electronic and computer music, an interest that began at Harvard, where he was a graduate assistant for Ivan Tcherepnin at the Harvard Electronic Music Studio. Burwell played in a number of art-minded New York-based rock bands in the late 1970s and early 80s including the Same, Thick Pigeon, and Radiante. He contributed vocals for these groups, but it was his unique and creative percussive effects and sound designs that attracted attention....
