(b Rudolstadt, Germany, Jan 13, 1889; d Los Angeles, CA, Oct 30, 1960). Composer, arranger, and orchestrator of German birth, naturalized American. Often credited as P.A. Marquardt, he graduated from the Dresden Conservatory of Music, where he studied violin with Henri Petri, harmony and composition with Felix Draeseke, and conducting with Hermann Ludwig Kutzschbach. After playing first violin with the Gewerbehaus Symphony in Dresden, he conducted European theater orchestras and grand opera and led an orchestra for Anna Pavlova for two years.
