(b Dublin, Ireland, Feb 6, 1967). Irish singer and songwriter. McKeown’s mother, an organist and composer who also ran a girls’ choir, exerted a strong early influence on her daughter’s musical development. However, McKeown’s exposure to the band Clannad, and to singers such as June Tabor and Dolores Keane as a teen, inspired an abiding interest in Irish women’s traditional song. Later, women artists from other parts of the world such as Elis Regina (Brazil) and Amália Rodrigues (Portugal) became important additional influences on McKeown’s burgeoning musical sensibility....
