Brass quintet with percussionist. The ensemble was founded in New York in 1987 by Jon Nelson (trumpet), Rolf Holly (trumpet), Tracy Leonard (horn), Benjamin Herrington (trombone), and Raymond Stewart (tuba). In 1990 it added percussionist Mo Roberts. Later members include Daniel Grabois (horn), John Ferrari (percussion), Brian McWhorter (trumpet), and Tim Leopold (trumpet). The group has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, Columbia, Costa Rica, and Latin America, performing a vast repertoire of literature ranging from the music of Renaissance composer Gesualdo to transcriptions of music by Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa. The Ensemble has recorded ten CDs (nine on the Channel Classics label) and has premiered over 60 new works by American composers including David Sanford, Mark Applebaum, Lei Liang, Elliott Sharp, and Edward Jacobs.
