A loud, unexpected, heavily accented note played on the bass drum. With the emergence of bop the bass drum’s function changed from time-keeping (steadily marking a quarter-note pulse in rhythmic unison with the double bass) to supplying accents. By placing accents irregularly and unpredictably, for example on upbeats or eighth-note offbeats, the drummer is said to be “dropping bombs.”...
