Leg rattles of the Venda people of southern Africa. Used by male or female dancers, they comprise a number of hollow globular fruit shells with small holes cut in the sides and containing small stones, threaded on parallel sticks (like an abacus), four or five shells to each stick. About six of these sticks are attached to a cloth pad with fibre cords, the ends of which are used to tie the pads to the dancers’ legs....
