Ensemble of seven bamboo transverse flutes and one hourglass drum or kundu, peculiar to the southernmost Iatmul village of Aibom, Papua New Guinea.The ensemble formerly played in the ceremonial house at a feast in honour of the pottery goddess, Yumanwusmangge, but now plays on occasions of widespread famine or sickness. The flutes are arranged in three pairs playing antiphonally plus one solo player, with the drummer leading the ensemble by adopting a particular pattern from a repertoire of at least 12 different rhythms.
