Free-reed mouth organ of Manipur, northeast India. It is related to the khāēn, sheng, and shō of Southeast and East Asia. A cane blowpipe is fixed into a protruding spout on a small round gourd, from whose top six pipes, tied in two bundles of three, issue vertically; each of these contains a brass free reed and is capped by a spherical fruit-shell mute. The pipes are sounded by closing a hole at their base, thus coupling the pipe to the reed. The instrument is used to accompany dance....
