(b Toronto, Sept 11, 1925). Canadian composer. He was a composition pupil of John Weinzweig at the Toronto Conservatory (1942–3 and 1945–9) and although he showed exceptional promise as a pianist, in 1948 he turned decisively to composition. The following year he was awarded a Canadian Amateur Hockey Association Scholarship to study for a year in Paris with Milhaud. Somers has never held a teaching position or sought permanent employment. In the 1950s he earned a living in a variety of odd jobs, briefly driving a taxi, working as a part-time music copyist and playing the guitar professionally. From ...
